"World Enough and Time" Review PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 October 2007

Star Trek New Voyages finally released "World Enough and Time" staring George Takei.  The previews looked intense, so I signed up to be on the first viewing guest list via their website.  I logged in on the release date along with many other eager fans.  The servers quickly fell victim to the demand and we were all sent packing....  without even a torrent.  Will somebody from New Voyages please do me a favor?  Please, the first thing you post on the site should be a torrent.  Direct download links and streaming links always fail under pressure.

I waited a couple of days and then I saw the torrent pop up.  I initiated the download, but I soon canceled for some odd reason (power went out along with UPS and backup generator...I don't know).  For some reason, I never sat down to complete the download.  I think part of it was because I wasn't impressed with their last offering (To Serve All My Days).  TSAMD was written by D.C. Fontana, so I had high hopes for the episode.  Fontana wrote one of my top 10 episodes from the original series.  Long story short, "To Serve All My Days" felt like a flat tire on the toilet.

Anyway, so it's Friday night and I figured I'd browse on over to the New Voyages site to see the latest news.  To my surprise, they're now offering a streaming video of "World Enough and Time" along with torrents.  Game on.  I chose the streaming route and was immediately impressed by the quality of the feed.  I switched the video to full screen, kicked up the feet, and busted out the Raisin Bran.  All good.

Here's the bottom line: "World Enough and Time" is by far their best episode to date.  George Takei is back in his role as Sulu, and he brings a very powerful performance.  The episode has all the ingredients of a good story.  Love, temporal rifts, drama, action, and I honestly can't say any more without giving the story away.  The storyline was A+ all the way.  It was co-written by Michael Reaves .  Reaves has a wide range of experience.  Many of my favorite TNG episodes were written by writers that jumped around from show to show.  Michael Reaves deserves major kudos for his work in this episode.  After all, it's taken Reaves 30 years to get it to production.  George Takei believed it was one of the best scripts he'd ever performed in.

If there is a downside to the episode, it would be the acting.   However, I've noticed a definite improvement in acting from the core cast since the pilot.  That is why I'm concerned about Jeff Quinn (Spock) leaving the show.  I actually liked him the best out of the new cast.  I'm hoping his replacement (Ben Tolpin) can hit the ground running.  In my opinion, it took two full season for the cast of "The Next Generation" (TNG) to figure out WTF they were doing.  The acting and cast chemistry in the first two seasons of TNG were horrible.  I still enjoyed the early TNG episodes but they were sometimes hard to watch.  That is why I'm hoping this doesn't become a trend were core cast roles become a revolving door in Star Trek New Voyages.  We know the money's not there.  A love for Star Trek won't put food on the table.  This could become an ongoing problem if the core cast can't mature with each other.

Did I notice any inconsistencies in "World Enough and Time" with the rest of the Star Trek universe?  I will not answer that question.  I enjoyed all of the Star Trek TV offerings as well as the TNG books.  I wouldn't be able to watch any episode if I nitpicked inconsistencies.  I admit that sometimes I just can't help myself, but I'm trying really hard not to.  So there, I won't.  It's a great episode.  Go download it.
